A Brief History
Suriname’s story is deeply tied to the Netherlands. As a former Dutch colony, it was an important hub for plantations during the 17th and 18th centuries. Many Surinamese people have ancestors from across Africa, Asia, and Europe, brought together by the country’s colonial past. In 1975, Suriname gained independence, but the Dutch influence remains visible in its language (Dutch is the official language) and architecture. Today, the Netherlands and Suriname remain closely connected, but surprisingly, not many Dutch people travel to Suriname. Tourism there is still growing, which makes it all the more fascinating to explore—offering an authentic and less crowded experience. Click here if you want to know more.
Suriname’s Stunning Nature
One of the greatest reasons to visit Suriname is its unspoiled nature. Over 90% of the country is covered in lush tropical rainforests, offering an incredible escape into the heart of the Amazon. Imagine cruising down the wide Suriname River, surrounded by dense jungle, spotting colorful birds, curious monkeys, and maybe even a caiman or two.

The People and Cultures of Suriname

One of the most amazing things about Suriname is how different religions live in harmony. Picture this: in the capital city, Paramaribo, there’s a mosque and a synagogue standing right next to each other. From churches to Hindu temples, Suriname shows how beautifully different cultures can come together.
The Colors and Flavors of Suriname
As soon as you arrive in Suriname, you’re greeted by a mysterious and delightful floral fragrance in the air. And then the colors take you by surprise—not just from the stunning natural surroundings, but also from the vibrant clothing and painted wooden houses.

And the food? It’s a delicious blend of flavors from around the world. Try roti (Indian flatbread with curried vegetables or chicken), pom (a savory baked dish made with cassava and chicken), or broodje bakkeljauw (a sandwich filled with spiced, salted fish). The markets in Paramaribo are a great place to explore tropical fruits, fragrant spices, and tasty street food that will leave you wanting more.
The Warm Weather and Tropical Vibes
If you’re looking for warm weather, Suriname is the place to be. With a tropical climate, temperatures stay between 24°C and 31°C (75°F–88°F) all year. The rainy seasons run from April to August and November to February, but don’t let that stop you from visiting.
Rain in Suriname is part of the experience. It makes the jungle greener, the waterfalls more powerful, and the rivers perfect for boat trips. Plus, the rain usually comes in short bursts, so there’s still plenty of time to explore. And let’s be honest—what’s more refreshing than watching the rainforest come alive while enjoying an ice cold drink.

From Curiosity to Wonder: Why Suriname Is in My Top 5 Destinations
When I was growing up, we didn’t learn much about Suriname in school. The role of the Netherlands in Suriname’s history, especially during the time of slavery, wasn’t talked about much. In recent years, this has started to change, and in 2023, the Dutch king officially apologized for the country’s involvement in slavery.
Many people with Surinamese roots live in Amsterdam, and I felt embarrassed that I knew so little about their history and culture. That curiosity is what inspired me to visit Suriname—I wanted to learn more about this incredible country.
What I didn’t expect was to be completely blown away. Suriname exceeded all my expectations, and it’s now firmly in my top 5 destinations in the world!
