10 Tips for a Smooth (and Surprisingly Comfortable) Experience at Schiphol Airport ✈️

Schiphol isn’t just the main airport of the Netherlands — it’s practically its own little city. With three main arrival halls, a vast shopping plaza before you even reach security, and one large departure hall split into three sections (1, 2 and 3), there’s a lot going on.

Security is on the first floor — so once you’ve dropped your bags and found your gate, you head upstairs. That’s where things open up: more shops, quiet corners, and sometimes even a piano you’re welcome to play. It can feel a little overwhelming at first, but once you find your rhythm, Schiphol becomes part of the journey — not just a place to rush through.

And for me, it’s always felt a bit like coming home.

Personal story

Did you know I used to work at Schiphol?

It’s been decades since I worked at Schiphol myself. I was Duty Manager Passenger Handling for a Dutch charter airline. It was an incredible time. Schiphol really is like a big village — busy day and night, full of stories. This is a photo of me in 1990 when I worked on Schiphol airport

Check-in usually started around 4:00 AM, and from there, hundreds of passengers needed to get to the right plane. Planning staff for every flight was like solving a constantly changing puzzle.
In the afternoon, the planes returned, passengers came back from their holidays, luggage had to be collected, and a new group had to get ready to fly out again. It never stopped. I must have walked hundreds of kilometers across those terminals (on heels!)

The late-night hours, when the airport was nearly silent, and a small team quietly handled the last incoming flights were my favorite. It was peaceful in its own way. Magical even.

Schiphol has changed a lot since then, but I still feel a connection every time I’m there.”*

1. Arrive Early — Schiphol Time Moves Differently

Aim for: 2 to 3 hours before your flight

Even with online check-in, Schiphol’s size means everything takes just a little longer — walking between halls, security queues, last-minute snack stops. Arriving early gives you a buffer to breathe.

Practical Tip: Security can get especially backed up in the mornings between 6–9 a.m. and late afternoon around 4–6 p.m. If your flight falls in these windows, give yourself extra time.

Fun Fact: The airport actually has it’s own (free) Rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the planes arriving and departing.

2. Download the Schiphol App 📲

Why it matters: Instant flight updates, gate changes, and directions

This app has saved me more than once — especially when a gate switches last-minute when you were hunting for a decent sandwich. It also shows live security wait times and walking distances between gates (which can be longer than expected).

Extra Tip: Turn on push notifications for your flight — that way, you’ll be alerted to delays or changes without needing to refresh constantly.

3. Choose the Right Parking — or Ride the Rails 🚗🚆

Are you arriving by car?

  • P1 is right next to the terminal, perfect for short trips. And take the indoor route to the terminal – perfect on rainy days

  • P3 is more budget-friendly for longer stays and offers frequent shuttles.

Public transport?
The train is a favorite. From Amsterdam Centraal, the ride to Schiphol takes about 15–20 minutes and drops you underneath the terminal. Just take the escalator or elevator up to arrivals.

Warning: check NS (Dutch Railways) for train times the night before, especially for early flights. It gives peace of mind.

4. Skip the Lines with Priority Access

Security lines at Schiphol can snake far — especially in summer. With Priority Pass (or some credit cards and airlines), you can skip the queues and access lounges.

Travel Hack: Some airlines sell priority security access as a one-time add-on during online check-in. If your departure is during peak hours, it’s worth every euro.
Priority pass is a world wide service, so you can use it on other airports as well.

5. Know Your Way Through Security

What helps:

  • No belts, extra clothing layers or chunky shoes if you can avoid them

  • Liquids under 100ml, all in a clear zip bag

  • Keep your laptop/tablet easy to reach

Tip: Families with young children or travelers needing assistance can use designated lanes that move a bit slower but are more relaxed.

Bonus: Once through security, the departure area is a big open space — you can wander between gates and shops.

Travelglaze tip: Watch out for the working man in the clock 😉

6. Bring Your Own Bottle

Schiphol has plenty of food options — but prices add up. I like to bring something light from home, especially for early flights when options are limited.

Water trick: Bring an empty bottle and fill it at one of the special water fountains post-security. They’re usually tucked near restrooms.

7. Lounge Life = Game Changer

Even if you’re not flying business class, many Schiphol lounges offer day passes. Lounge 41 (non-Schengen) and Lounge 25 (Schengen) are both peaceful, with comfy chairs, charging outlets, and decent food.

Why I love it: It’s not just about luxury. It’s about finding a quiet space to reset — especially if your flight is delayed or you’re in transit.

Insider tip: Some lounges have shower access too. A lifesaver on long-haul journeys.

8. Explore Wellness and Relaxation Services 🌿

Travel can be taxing, but Schiphol offers several wellness services to help you relax:

  • Holisteq Treatment: A unique wellness experience focusing on meditation and energy balance, located in Lounge 2.

  • Massage-O-Matic Chairs: Available in multiple locations after security, these chairs offer quick massages to relieve tension.

  • Meditation Centre: A quiet space for mindfulness and relaxation, also situated in Lounge 2.

9. Consider VIP and Assistance Services

For those seeking an enhanced airport experience, Schiphol offers services like Luxury Airport Services (LAS) and Meet & Assist. These provide personalized assistance, including expedited security, baggage handling, and even caddy transport through the airport.
And of course there is also an excellent medical assistance service available.

Who it’s for: VIPs, business travelers, or anyone needing extra assistance, including medical support.

Booking Tip: It’s advisable to arrange these services in advance to ensure availability.

10. Dress Comfortably and Be Prepared

Airport temperatures can vary, and you’ll likely be on your feet more than anticipated.

Best Combo: Opt for easy layered clothing and comfortable footwear. If you’re on a long-haul flight, consider items like compression socks to enhance circulation.

Personal Anecdote: Reflecting on my days at Schiphol, I recall covering countless kilometers across the terminals, often in heels. Comfortable shoes would have been a game-changer!

Final Thought:

Schiphol might seem massive and impersonal at first glance — but if you know where to look, it has its soft edges. A sense of movement and rhythm that makes it feel alive.

And for me, it’s more than just an airport — it’s a place filled with memories.

Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, take a deep breath, walk a little slower, and give yourself a moment to look around. There’s more comfort (and curiosity) here than you might expect.

🛫 Safe travels, and soft landings. Always.
